Dentist for Spanish-speaking students on the Gold Coast
Studying English or at university on the Gold Coast? Here's how dental care, OSHC and costs work in Australia — explained in Spanish, by dentists who've been through it too.
Every year thousands of students from Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Spain and across Latin America arrive on the Gold Coast to study. Most have never used the Australian health system, and dental care is where the surprises usually happen — because Medicare doesn't cover it, and most Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policies don't either unless you add dental extras.
That's why we wrote this page. Surfers Dental Centre is a short walk from Cavill Avenue and the language schools around Surfers Paradise, both principal dentists are native Spanish speakers, and we'll tell you honestly what needs doing now, what can wait, and what it will cost — in writing, before anything starts.
What students need to know
- You don't need a Medicare card — private dental is paid directly, and we give you a receipt to claim from your OSHC or overseas fund
- Check whether your OSHC includes dental extras (Bupa, Medibank, Allianz, NIB and AHM all offer add-ons) — if it does, we claim it on the spot with HICAPS
- A check-up and clean is the cheapest visit you'll ever have — a small problem found early is a filling, not a root canal
- Afterpay and interest-free plans let you spread the cost across a semester
