Receding gums
Teeth looking longer, roots showing, sensitivity at the gumline? Gum recession can be stabilised — and sometimes repaired.
What it can mean
Gum recession is when the gum pulls back from the tooth and exposes the root. The main causes are gum disease, brushing too hard with a firm brush, grinding, a thin gum type you were born with, and orthodontic or bite issues. Exposed roots are sensitive, decay more easily and, in later stages, can loosen the tooth.
Gum doesn't grow back on its own, but recession can be stopped. Treating gum disease, switching to a soft brush and gentle technique, and a night guard if you grind will protect what you have. For visible or sensitive areas, gum grafting can cover exposed roots.
How we can help
- Measure the recession and diagnose the cause
- Treat gum disease and desensitise exposed roots
- Brushing coaching, a night guard if needed, and grafting options for advanced cases
