Tooth pain or bleeding gums in pregnancy

Dental care during pregnancy is safe and important. Bleeding gums are very common; toothache shouldn't be endured — treat it.

What it can mean

Pregnancy hormones make gums more sensitive to plaque, so many women notice swollen, tender or bleeding gums from the second month — called pregnancy gingivitis. Morning sickness can also soften enamel, and cravings and snacking increase decay risk. None of this is a reason to avoid the dentist; the opposite, in fact.

Check-ups, cleans, fillings and even root canals or extractions are safe during pregnancy, with the second trimester the most comfortable time. Local anaesthetic is safe; we shield you for any essential X-rays and defer anything non-urgent. Untreated infection carries far more risk to you and the baby than treatment does.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if it's needed to diagnose a problem. Modern digital dental X-rays use a tiny dose, aimed away from the abdomen, and we use a lead apron. Routine X-rays that aren't urgent are simply postponed until after the birth.
